Starfruit (Averrhoa carambola)

Starfruit (Averrhoa carambola) is one type of medicinal plants , a species that is widely available in the  Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Starfruit is also growing in tropical America, as in  Peru, Colombia,  Costa Rica, Trinidad, Ecuador, Guyana, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico,  Brazil,  Haiti and in the United States is in southern Hawaii and Florida.
Called star fruit because when the fruit is cut crosswise shaped like a star. This fruit has a sour taste, slightly sweet, sugar content of not more than 4%, yellow-green when young and reddish yellow when it's old, small brown seeds, it sweet with a little sour and contains a lot of water.
Starfruit has two distinct types, namely a smaller type, it is more acid, oxalic acid content of more. Whereas the larger type, mild sweet taste, somewhat bland, with less oxalic acid content.

Benefits and Ingredients :

Starfruit has many benefits as a medicinal plants . The content of vitamin C and vitamin A is high in the starfruit has benefits as antioxidants and potassium, which works to fight free radicals and prevent the spread of cancer cells, increase endurance, and prevent canker sores. Pectin found in starfruit  can bind cholesterol and bile acids in the intestine, and then help their spending so that it can lower cholesterol levels in the blood and aid digestion. Whereas the high content of potassium and low sodium very possible starfruit as antihypertensive drugs.
 
Fruits that contain lots of water, has a very low calorie levels so that suited by those who are dieting (losing weight). Fibers contained in the starfruit may function in digestion so there is no constipation.
 
Contra Indicated :
Besides having the benefit, in some cases starfruit was also very dangerous for consumption. Due to the high sugar content, this fruit not recommended for consumption by diabetics. Also in patients with kidney disease, eating fruit will add severe illness due to the high content of acid oxalates contained in starfruit.
In addition, the starfruit contain toxins that affect the brain and the nerves which in patients with kidney disease, toxins can not be filtered and removed so that her kidneys will worsen the situation.
